The sintering kinetics have been compared for direct and susceptor-assisted rapid 24 GHz microwave heating of alumina – 3 % yttria-stabilized zirconia samples prepared from commercial powders and powders obtained by laser evaporation. The temperature of the phase transformation in alumina decreased consistently with increasing microwave electromagnetic field intensity. Ce:YAG + Al2O3 composite samples have been fabricated by microwave reaction sintering. Under microwave heating the temperatures of phase transformations in both alumina and the Y – Al – O system decreased compared to conventional heating.
