The interaction between energy input from the electric field and heating of a sample in a multimode microwave system depends on the mode that is excited. However, simulations involving the design of the process require this information. Conventional measuring instruments cannot be used to perform spatially resolved measurements of the field strength distribution in a sample. This paper therefore presents a method for indirectly determining the mode of the electric field using a temperature measurement in the sample with high spatial resolution.
