This paper presents microwave heating (MWH)-assisted techniques developed at CNR SCITEC laboratories in Genoa for the preparation of advanced materials. By modifying a domestic microwave oven, a variety of innovative materials were synthesized, sintered, or thermally processed (e.g., foamed or melted). These include inorganic compounds such as superconducting magnesium diboride (MgB2), as well as organic and hybrid composites. The study highlights significant improvements in energy efficiency, processing time, material properties, and environmental sustainability. Specific applications include the rotational moulding of polyethylene (PE) powders, foaming and sintering of hydroxyapatite (HAp) based scaffolds, preparation of cork-based sound-absorbing composite panels, and expanded polystyrene (EPS) composites for construction.
