The concept of active antenna is mainly applied in relatively low-power microwave devices [1] (used e.g. in communication and sensing systems). The adoption of this approach for heating applications, by combining the active generator (amplifier or oscillator) and the passive antenna or applicator into an integrated device, was proposed and preliminarily demonstrated by Jerby et al. in AMPERE Newsletter (Issue 96, pp. 16-23, 2018). Here we present several experimental implementations of solid-state active applicators, relevant for industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) applications, in amplifier and oscillator schemes. The direct integration of the amplifier and the applicator forms a new “amplicator” device, as resulted from the active-applicator approach. This integration reduces the interconnects between the power amplifier and the antenna; improves the overall compactness and efficiency of the microwave-heating system, and reduces its complexity and cost. The paper is concluded by our outlook on the potential active-applicator advantages for future ISM systems.
